Realeyes3D Hits 30 Million Handset Milestone with Handwritten Messaging Applications

Tue Jul 10 05:00:00 2007

PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Realeyes3D, a leading provider of mobile imaging applications for camera phone users, today announced that its handwritten messaging applications have been shipped in more than 30 million camera phones worldwide, including handsets by its OEM customers Samsung and Sanyo.

Handwritten messaging applications allow camera phone users to send messages that they create in their own handwriting, using a standard pen and any type of paper. A complement to text messaging, handwritten messaging offers a newer, richer and more personal form of traditional messaging. Realeyes3Ds handwritten messaging applications Digitizer and w-Postcard enable users to create highly personalized messages that go beyond simple text to include handwritten diagrams, maps, drawings, photos or images.

Realeyes3Ds handwritten messaging applications represent an evolution in person-to-person communication beyond text messaging, said Benoît Bergeret, co-founder and CEO of Realeyes3D. In the fiercely competitive wireless marketplace, operators and handset manufacturers are actively looking for applications that add compelling value to their devices as camera phone adoptions skyrocket.

According to a recent Strategy Analytics study, the installed base of camera phones will exceed one billion by the end of the year. The same report forecasts that by 2011, one third of the world population or just over 2 billion people will own a camera phone. Based on this study, Realeyes3D estimates that thirteen percent of all camera phones shipped in the U.S. have Realeyes3D handwritten messaging applications pre-installed.

Digitizer allows camera phone users to share personal messages that they create with a standard pen and paper. Users jot down a message, snap a picture of it, and Digitizer extracts the message from the camera image, resulting in a black-and-white or true-color clear, legible handwritten picture message that can be shared immediately with others. Digitizer messages are not limited to words but may also include drawings, maps, symbols or anything that can be created with a pen and paper. For mobile users with non-Latin alphabets, such as Japanese, Chinese or Korean, Digitizer is an ideal way to overcome the limitations of text messaging.

W-Postcard allows camera phone users to add comments, notes, doodles or drawings to pictures they have taken with their camera phone. Mobile users simply overlay the photo that they have taken with the handwritten content that theyve created and captured. Users can manipulate the handwritten content by changing its size, color, placement and appearance to create a very personalized image that then can be stored or shared.

Because it makes use of existing messaging protocols such as MMS (GSM) and email (CDMA), handwritten messaging does not require specific software on the receiving handset side. Digitizer and w-Postcard are powered by Realeyes3Ds patented ink extraction technology. Both applications have been successfully qualified on proprietary platforms as well as BREW, Symbian, Windows Mobile, and Java, and have a minimal footprint they can run in any of the camera phones currently available.
